In Fall of 2023, I taught a graduate seminar for four hardworking artists. Alongside studio visits and group critiques, I also assigned a body of readings - mostly from other artists - that explicitly discussed notions of "context" in one's work: how one locates it, where it exists, what it's good for, and so on.

These readings were accompanied by small-scale writing/visual assignments designed to help each student in the class articulate - to themselves and to each other - a context for their work. A primary question we returned to over the course of the semester was "What are the forces that have shaped you, with or without your permission?"

I was so moved by my students' willingness to engage in this process, not to mention their results. This kind of information for an artist at the beginning of their studio life feels critical - so I decided to assemble everything into a book. It's structured in such a way that this project serves as a deep dive into the thinking of four very different young artists, but it can also act as a guide for those looking to explore these questions themselves.

The title comes from student Michael Strombeck's final "Timeline" project: a description of his physical surroundings and bodily movement that accompanied a moment of internal revelation.

Includes contributions by Dalong Hu, Zoe Nielsen, Michael Strombeck, and Nathan Wilkinson, with an introductory essay by yours truly.
